Located just North of Berlin, Sachsenhausen was the concentration camp closest to the Nazi capital andbecame an prototype on which all other camps were based.

Built in 1936, the prisoners here were far more than 'normal' criminals - they were Communists, Social Democrats, oppositional Catholics, Jews and whoever else the Nazis considered their enemy. Erected by its first inmates it was never designed as an extermination camp. Up until the end of the war, 200.000 inmates from 40 countries were imprisoned here of which tens of thousands were killed by mass shootings. On this tour you will learn more about camp organisation, the prisoners' daily life and their struggle for survival on the basis of selected biographies.
